Why is anti-reflective coating so VERY important?

The Windows to Your Soul?  Ehhhh..... we can't see them!

The truth is anti-reflective coating (AR) should be on every pair of eyeglassesto protect your eyes and give you the best vision possible!

An anti-reflective or anti-reflection (AR) coating is a type of optical coating applied to the surface of lenses and other optical elements to reduce reflection. In typical imaging systems, this improves the efficiency since less light is lost due to reflection. In complex systems such as telescopes and microscopes, the reduction in reflections also improves the contrast of the image by the elimination of stray light. This is especially important in planetary astronomy. In other applications, the primary benefit is the elimination of the reflection itself, such as a coating on eyeglass lenses that make the eyes of the wearer more visible to others, or a coating to reduce the glint from a covert viewer's binoculars telescopic sight. Wikipedia

AR is made of a very hard thin film, similar to anti-scratch coating, that is layered onto the lens. "It is made of a material that has an index of refraction that is somewhere between air and glass."

The main and most important reason is that the clarity in vision that you are trying to get when you wear corrective lenses has to do with the amount of light in the back of your eye. Anti-glare/reflective coating lets the light pass through the lenses into your eyes, to the back of the eyes where it is needed.  AR does not allow the light to bounce off your lenses as would lenses without the coating. The coating allows light to pass through. You lose 8% of the light that’s coming in when there is no coating on your lenses.

light travels into the eyes - Anti reflective coating benefits

Basically, the more light in the back of your eye the sharper the vision.

Why? It's due to the refractive errors that your eyes may have, which does not let your eyes properly focus light.

Refraction is the process of light bending as it passes through one object to another. Our eyes "see" when light rays are bent (refracted) as they pass through the cornea and the lens. The light is then focused on the retina.

The types of errors are based on the symptoms resulting from the amount of refraction that happens i.e. the amount of light that is bent.
  • Nearsightedness (myopia) -  Light comes to focus in front of the retina rather than on the retina
  • Farsightedness (hyperopia)
  • Astigmatism - Blurry vision resulting from  the eye not focusing light evenly onto the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (see more below)
  • Prysobia - age-related where close vision becomes harder to focus because of the decreased ability of the eye to change shape.
This is especially more helpful for people with higher prescriptions (as the prescription gets higher, this group of people will find more value) or for people with astigmatism.

For example, regular plastic lenses reflect roughly 8 percent of light hitting the lenses, so only 92 percent of available light enters the eye for vision. High index plastic lenses can reflect up to 50 percent more light than regular plastic lenses (approximately 12 percent of available light), so even less light is available to the eye for vision. This can be particularly troublesome in low-light conditions, such as when driving at night. AllaboutVision

Astigmatism is all about the shape of the eye – the light doesn’t hit where it’s supposed to. The angle that is given on the prescription - allows for the right amount of light to the back of your eye/eyes.

So A/R coated lenses help by again bringing more light to the back of your eyes!

People with cataracts – are greatly helped with the anti-reflective coating (anti-glare) because their primary problem is with the burst of light that they see. People with cataracts in the early stages- often complain about the glare during the night. Most eye doctors find that anti-reflective coating is great for reducing this effect.

Dr Kershaw said. “Patients who need good vision in low-level lighting, people in fields where eye contact is very important and patients who are finicky about the way they look would benefit most from AR coating.

Additional improvements to your vision because of AR coatings?

Fewer reflections not only when you are looking at reflective surfaces (like the hood of a car when driving, or water surface or snow) but also when people are looking at you there is less reflection visible to the person looking at you.

Is anti-glare coating on glasses worth it?
The average price for AR coating is anywhere from $50 to $150 in addition to the price of the lenses. It is important to note that Eyewear Insight offers this coating for free on all glasses.
Even though AR gives relief from glare on the back of the lens, there are several other ways to reduce or eliminate glare from passing through the lens. These include:

Bottom line:

The anti-reflective coating allows 99.5% of light to pass through to the back of your eyes.
  •     Free Anti-Reflective (AR) coating means you see better and have sharper vision because the lenses allow light to the back of your         eyes.
  •     AR makes driving much more safe and comfortable with sharper vision because of  less glare when driving at night
  •     More comfort when using the computer for long periods (compared with wearing eyeglass lenses without AR coating).
  •     Your lenses don’t reflect the light – so that when people are looking at you they can see your eyes and your face(expressions).
AND
  • When taking your selfie do you want to be the only one with white glare on your eyes??
Meaning: we want to see YOUR lovely eyes because the lenses are not white from the light reflecting off of them!

Let us see your eyes, with Eyewear Insight you don’t have to consider the cost and make a benefit analysis – you just get it for free!

HOW TO READ YOUR GLASSES PRESCRIPTION

How To Read And Enter Your Prescription

Reading your eyeglasses prescription can be a little confusing as different opticians/ophthalmologists use different formats.

Just calmly look for the O.S and O.D once you have find these (or have been told) you will be able to tell if your prescription is either for single vision lenses (with one type of distance vision correction, computer glasses, and reading glasses are single vision) or bifocal/progressive lenses. (to distances, reading at the bottom and distance in the mid and top range; three distances, reading, mid and far distances, respectively)

The OS and OD tells you what is needed for the left and the right eye (respectively). if you simply see a number under the first portion the "Sphere" then that's it. It indicates that all other options are 0.00 (which may or may not clearly been written into the spaces for cylindrical and axis) sometimes it is written as "plano" which also indicates 0.00.

See below for further clarification with diagrams. If you are unsure or unclear please call us and we will help.

eNABLE YOUR CAMER TO USE OUR VIRTUAL TRY ON FOR GLASSES - MIRROR

You want to try on the glasses you like virtually but something is not working right!

Here is some help trouble shooting your computer - you must allow Eyewearinsight.com to use your camera before we are allowed to use it.

Depending on the browser you are using there are different steps you can take. Mostly, it's a question of privacy along with saftey so you want to be sure you know where you are allowing access.
First thing that maybe missing from you computer is the Flash Player by Adobe - this is needed to run the application we use for the virtual try on. If you don't have it already installed on you computer you will need to download that.

Download Adobe Flash

Once you have done that you will need to give permission to run the camera - on most PCs this is simple enough - on either Firefox or Chrome you will be asked to allow or disallow and that will be it.
On Apple it maybe slightly more complicated - we will let them explain it:
  1. Enable Flash on Mac

When purchasing prescription eyeglasses online it might be a good idea to check out your insurance plan and check on the coverage you have. Or to be clear  about what insurances have to offer.

WHAT TYPES OF VISION PLANS ARE AVAILABLE?

Vision plans are typically offered in one of two ways either a vision insurance benefits package or a discount vision plan. Your company or you may have purchased either of these by enrolling and often paying a monthly premium.

INSURANCE:

Insurer ( your employer or you) pays the doctor. You pay copay and extra charges not covered under the policy.

DISCOUNT PLAN:

You pay doctor directly at a discounted rate.

Vision insurance provides free coverage for an exam and for eyewear (even when you buy eyewear online) up to a fixed dollar amount in exchange for an annual premium and co-pay (fixed dollar amount).
If the type of lenses options you (or your eye care professional prescribes for you) pick and the total price is over the plans fixed dollar amount, you are then responsible for the overage.

For example, if frames are covered up to $160, and your plan allowance for frames is $100.00, off you would pay the $60.00 difference. Same for the lenses.

Discount vision plans, after you pay an annual premium, provide eye care and eyewear at discounted rates. You pay the service provider (doctor or retailer) the entire cost directly, based on the pre-negotiated, discounted rate.

When it comes to more serious medical issues regarding the eyes these insurances do not cover those. They will simply cover routine eye exams and prescription eyewear you would need to look to your health insurance carries for anything more. There are several companies that offer these; here is a list of some.
